Garden Makeover
We at Dragonflies Day Nursery were awarded £8,660 from BTCV People's
Places Award Scheme in 2004 to develop our outdoor play areas. We
had nine months in which to complete our project once we received
the first payment. Part of the requirement of the grant was that
volunteers gave their time to make the project happen. We had
parents and members of the community volunteering to lay paving,
redecorate our playhouse, planting and putting our play boat
together.
Our garden has been transformed into an exciting and secure
environment where the children play and learn. We have planted trees
to create shaded areas, shrubs to attract wildlife, herbs for
sensory experiences and made a vegetable patch. We have purchased a
wooden play boat 'HMS Dragonflies' and redecorated the play house
for role play and quiet times.
The benefits the garden gives the children is that they can play
outdoors freely, safely and it encourages healthy, emotional,
physical development. The garden provides outdoor experiences and
opportunities where the children explore, discover, problem solve
and have regular exercise in all weathers.
